The 1st indication of alternator failure is the battery symbol warning light on the right side of the combination meter (dashboard meter). 2nd indication is the voltage reading (if a volt meter is included [or installed]). One test is not enough if you are diagnosing a charging system problem. All too often, the alternator is condemned as the source of the problem if only battery voltage is present with the engine running. If this is the case, it only means that the alternator is not charging, but does not reveal why.

The little white plug has 2 wires on it. The thicker is the voltage out of the alternator back to the battery. The smaller wire is the exciter wire.
Jan 29, 2003 · I checked it with a DMM and it's truly getting down to 11.X volts when idling on warmer mornings. The drive belt is tight, and the wiring appears good. I've had the plug get a bit corroded and not make good contact, but that resulted in too high of voltage output. I have no idea whether that is a reputable source or not.
